FAQ

Ohio Turnpike, frequently asked

Toll costs, E-ZPass, payment, driving, and commercial vehicles. 30 questions answered with current 2026 data.

Toll costs and rates

How much does it cost to drive the entire Ohio Turnpike?+
$19.00 westbound or $16.00 eastbound for a Class 1 passenger car with E-ZPass; $27.75 / $23.50 cash. The route is 241 miles, PA border to IN border.
How much is the toll for a passenger car with E-ZPass?+
Class 1 E-ZPass rate in 2026 is $0.073 per mile. A 100-mile stretch is therefore about $7.25 once rounded to the nearest 25 cents.
Do eastbound and westbound tolls differ?+
Only on trips crossing the Eastgate barrier near the Pennsylvania line, which charges westbound traffic a flat round-trip-rate toll; eastbound traffic passes it free. That makes the full route $19.00 westbound vs $16.00 eastbound for Class 1 E-ZPass. Trips staying west of Eastgate cost the same in both directions.
How often do Ohio Turnpike toll rates increase?+
Annually, every 1 January. The current published 2024-2028 schedule applies a 2.7 percent increase each year through 2028.
Is there a minimum toll amount?+
No. The shortest fares between adjacent toll plazas run as low as $0.50 for a Class 1 car with E-ZPass, and local trips in the far-west or far-east free zones cost nothing.
How are tolls calculated, per mile or flat fee?+
Both, depending on where you drive. The middle of the road (Swanton to Newton Falls) is a ticketed section priced per entry/exit pair from the official fare matrix. The two ends use flat barrier tolls: Westgate (both directions) and Eastgate (westbound only).
Are there toll-free stretches of the Ohio Turnpike?+
Yes, at the two ends. Local trips between exits 13-39 in the far west, or exits 215-234 in the far east, cross no toll point and are free. Eastbound traffic also passes the Eastgate barrier free.
When did the last toll increase take effect?+
1 January 2026, a 2.7 percent rise as scheduled in the 2024-2028 plan. The next is set for 1 January 2027.

E-ZPass

Does E-ZPass work on the Ohio Turnpike?+
Yes. All E-ZPass member-state transponders are accepted at the discounted Ohio rate.
Does my out-of-state E-ZPass work in Ohio?+
Yes. Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana, Illinois, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia and other member-state tags are read at the Ohio gantries and charged at the Ohio E-ZPass rate.
How much does E-ZPass save on the Ohio Turnpike?+
About 31 percent for Class 1 in 2026 ($0.073/mi vs $0.106/mi). Full route savings: $8.75 westbound.
Where can I buy an E-ZPass transponder?+
Online at ohioezpass.com, by mail, or in person at a customer service centre. Some Turnpike service plazas issue starter kits.
Is there a monthly fee for Ohio E-ZPass?+
$0.75 a month, waived in any month with 30 or more single trips on the Ohio Turnpike. Daily commuters generally never pay the fee.
Can I share my E-ZPass between vehicles?+
You can move it between vehicles registered to the same account. Moving it to a vehicle of a different class without updating the account can lead to plate-based billing at the unpaid-toll rate, which is higher than both the E-ZPass and cash rates.

Payment and violations

What payment methods are accepted?+
E-ZPass (cheapest), cash and credit / debit cards at the lanes (cash/credit rate), and mailed invoices for unpaid in-lane tolls at the unpaid-toll rate, which is the highest tier.
What happens if I drive through without paying?+
Cameras record your plate and the Ohio Turnpike mails an invoice at the unpaid-toll rate. A $5 fee is added if the first invoice is not paid by its due date, and unpaid invoices can lead to a registration hold.
How do mailed toll invoices work?+
Cameras record the licence plate and the registered owner receives an invoice in the mail at the unpaid-toll rate, which is higher than both the E-ZPass and the cash/credit rate.
Can I pay with a credit card?+
Yes, at staffed cashier lanes. Same rate as cash. Contactless tap-to-pay is widely supported.
How do I dispute a toll charge?+
Contact the Ohio Turnpike via ohioturnpike.org and reference the invoice number. Common reasons include misread plate, sold vehicle, and incorrect class.

Driving and route

Is the Ohio Turnpike the same as I-80?+
For most of its Ohio crossing, yes. I-80 joins the Turnpike at Exit 218 (Niles-Youngstown) and stays on it west to the Indiana border, where it continues as the Indiana Toll Road. I-90 joins at Exit 142 in Lorain County; east of Exit 218 the Turnpike carries I-76 to the Pennsylvania line.
What is the speed limit on the Ohio Turnpike?+
70 mph for all vehicles, including commercial. 10 mph at toll plazas. Variable signs reduce the limit in construction or weather.
Are there rest stops on the Ohio Turnpike?+
Yes, 14 service plazas in 7 pairs (one per direction) at miles 20, 76, 100, 139, 170, 197 and 237. All open 24/7 with fuel, food and restrooms.
What cities does the Ohio Turnpike pass through?+
Going west: Youngstown, Akron, Cleveland (south of), Lorain / Elyria, Sandusky / Cedar Point area, Fremont, Toledo, then the Indiana border.

No. The Ohio Turnpike is Ohio's only major toll road. All other interstates and US highways in the state are free.

About 3 hours 45 minutes at the 70 mph limit, end to end. With a service plaza stop and normal traffic, plan on 4 to 4.5 hours.

Eight classes, set by height over the first two axles (the 7'6" threshold), total axle count, and overall length. Class 1 is low 2-axle vehicles and all motorcycles; Class 8 is any vehicle over 90 feet long.
Does the Ohio Turnpike have weigh stations?+
Yes, at multiple service plazas. PrePass and Drivewyze bypass enrollment is recognised; uncertified trucks must pull in when signage is lit.
Are there hazmat restrictions?+
Standard placarded loads are permitted. Specific class-9 explosives and certain bulk radiological loads are restricted. Check current ODOT and Turnpike notices.
